Maya Practice Scenes

Postby michael.wilkie » March 3rd, 2015, 6:46 pm

Hey all, I'll be using this thread to track my improvement and ability with Maya through the models that I put together (out of class time) over the course of my time at AIE. I've never used any Autodesk programs before so it's all a bit new to me but I hope to improve a lot over the next few months!

A week into the 3D Art Pipeline course and and I've finally wrapped my head around primitives and the basic modelling toolkit, so to practice a few of these starting techniques I've put together a basic scene.

~45 minutes

Let me know what you think; this space is for me to learn so any suggestions and/or constructive critiques are highly appreciated!

Thanks Ryan! Yeah that's the default physical sun and sky; I'll work out lighting setups when we get there :D

I'm starting to get the hang of using the tools together and some of the hot-keys too, but there's still a long way to go! I'm definitely finding that the more I use Maya, the less confused I am :)

Anyway I've begun working on a new piece that I hope to turn into a decent model as I learn more. It's the base mesh for a dragon head I started today. Over the next couple of days I want to start putting in some of the proper detail and fixing what I've done so far.

Really cool dragon head man. I wish I got the hang of Maya as fast as this when I started. Keep it up !

Thanks William; that means a lot :D

Daniel, as of this week's 3D Art Pipeline lesson I've been using it for about 3 weeks! I hope to improve a lot over the next few months and become really proficient at modelling in Maya :)

I haven't really managed to work on the dragon too much this week due to work and classes but I've made a few improvements such as small mesh changes and the inclusion of an eye that pulls the head together a bit better. Hoping to get some proper work done on it soon!

With your eye and nose. I challenge you to figure out how to create the cavities for those two features. especially for the eye :)

you will need to add in some new edge-loops and extrude inwards around the eye.

also at the tip of his upper jaw - see if you can figure out a way to remove all of those tri's and instead try replace them with 4 sides polygons :)

looking good mate, keep it up

looking great, keen for the updates, interested in the texturing process you would eventually do.

Not much progress again but I smashed out an eye socket and a nostril as per Ryan's suggestions! I'm yet to tackle the tri-to-quad dilemma on the snout but I'll get to it :D

After the class this week I've been freaking out over some of the capabilities of hypershade and I've been trying a few simple material combinations on the model; I'll post updates as they come :)
